The following map shows the areas of the city where students who are chronically absent live. A student is chronically absent if the student has missed 10% or more enrolled school days in a year.
Wards 8 and 7 – the areas with the greatest number of students, the greatest percentages of students living in poverty, the highest rates of asthma related emergency room visits, and the highest rates of students who attend public schools other than their in-boundary school and leave their ward for school. These two wards also have the highest rates of chronic absenteeism at 53% and 47% respectively. With the exception of Ward 3, all wards have rates of chronic absenteeism above 30%. Ward 3, the area of the city with the highest median income and the lowest percentage of children living in poverty, has a chronic absenteeism rate of 17%.
