Total Population Trends

After decades of decline, Washington, DC’s population steadily increased between 2000 and 2020, growing by almost 30,000 residents between 2000 and 2010 and then by another approximately 88,000 people in the next 10 years. The District's population declined between 2020 and 2021 during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, decreasing to 669,037 residents (revised from Census's previous estimate of 668,791 residents). The latest estimate for 2024 is 702,250 residents, surpassing the most recent high point in 2020.
