Total Population Trends

After decades of decline, Washington, DC’s population steadily increased between 2000 and 2020, growing by almost 30,000 residents between 2000 and 2010 and then by another approximately 88,000 people in the next 10 years. Washington, DC's population declined between 2020 and 2021 during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, decreasing to 668,791 residents (revised from Census's original estimate of 670,050 residents). The estimate for 2022 increased by approximately 3,000 residents to 671,803.
