Private School Enrollment

The latest American Community Survey (ACS) estimates with 90% confidence that between 11,633 and 15,803 nursery school through 12th grade students in Washington, DC attended private school. The ACS also estimates that 14.4% of all nursey school to grade 12 students were enrolled in private school in 2021. This percentage is slightly lower than the 2019 estimate of 15.5%; however, it is not a statistically significant difference.

The number and share of private school students varies by ward. The five-year American Community Survey estimates that between 4,551 and 5,721 students in Ward 3 attended private school between the time period of 2017 and 2021. This number continues to be substantially higher than all other wards. While the number of students estimated to have been enrolled in private school in Ward 2 is lower (between 990 and 1,558 students), the estimated share of Ward 2 students in private school is similarly high at 54%. The estimated share of private school students in other wards ranges from 16% in Wards 1 and 6 to 7% in Ward 8.
