Where Public School Students Live

More public school students across all grades (excluding adult schools) live in Wards 8 and 7 than in any other wards. However, Ward 8 has experienced year-over-year declines in the number of public school students living there since SY2023-24. In contrast, the number of public school students residing in other wards (except Ward 2) has steadily increased, with particularly notable growth in Ward 4 and Ward 5. When filtering the visualization below to show only prekindergarten (PK) students, the declines in Wards 8 and 7 are particularly steep beginning in SY2019-20. Select the DCPS high school boundary filter to see how many students of any grade live within each boundary, and you’ll notice the number of students residing in the Coolidge, Dunbar, and Eastern boundaries has significantly increased.

Three neighborhood clusters continue to be home to the largest number of public school students (all grade levels excluding adult school students): Brightwood Park/Crestwood/Petworth (Cluster 18), Congress Heights (Cluster 39), Columbia Heights/Mt Pleasant (Cluster 2), and Takoma/Brightwood (Cluster 17).
