Public School Enrollment by Grade Level

The largest enrollment growth between SY2008-09 and SY2023-24 was in prekindergarten grades (PK3 and PK4) and elementary grades (K to 5), at 5,111 students and 11,635 students, respectively. The category including adult schools, alternative schools, and special education schools (those exclusively serving high need students) also had significant growth, driven mainly by an increase in adult school enrollment. The number of middle school students (6-8) and high school students (9 to 12) grew the least compared to the other grade levels but still it increased by 3,808 students and 2,654 students, respectively. These secondary grade increases were due mostly by public charter middle and high schools.
