Public School Enrollment by Race and Ethnicity

The majority of the District's public school student population is Black. The number of Black students began leveling off and even slightly decreasing after SY2016-17. After Black student enrollment increased in SY2022-23 and SY2023-24, it decreased by a little less than 300 students in SY2024-25. The number of Hispanic/Latino and white public school students have been growing since SY2013-14, decreasing only in SY2020-21 (the first year of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic). See the interactive dashboard for information about specific grade levels and the DME's Edsight on enrollment trends by race/ethnicity.

The racial/ethnic makeup of the public school population has become more diverse as the number and share of Hispanic and white students has increased over the last decade. Enrollment in prekindergarten grades (PK3 and PK4) and elementary grades are slightly more racially/ethnically diverse than middle school and high school grades.
