School Enrollment by Special Populations - English Learners

Schools with large numbers of English learner students are concentrated in the following neighborhood clusters: Brightwood Park, Crestwood, Petworth (Cluster 18); Columbia Heights and Mt Pleasant (Cluster 2); Takoma and Brightwood (Cluster 17); and Lamont Riggs and Fort Totten (Cluster 19). The same neighborood clusters have large shares of English learner students enrolled as a porportion of total school enrollment in the cluster as well including Kalorama Heights and Adams Morgan (Cluster 1). Other neighborhood clusters with above average porportions of English learner enrollment include Howard University and Le Droit Park (Cluster 3) and Cleveland Park and Woodley Park (Cluster 15).

Public School English Learner Enrollment by Neighborhood Cluster, SY13-14 to SY22-23

Since SY13-14, approximately 4,200 additional students have been identified as English learners, a 59% increase compared to the 17% growth in total enrollment of students under the age of 22. The noticeable increase in SY17-18 was due to a national revision to the assessment test. In SY21-22, the second full school year affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, English learner enrollment increased by over 700 students compared to the previous school year. In SY22-23, English learners increased by only 45 more students compared to the year before.
