Number of LEAs and Schools

In SY2025-26, there are 67 Local Education Agencies (LEA) that have schools offering elementary, middle, and high school as well as schools specifically designated for adult, alternative, and special education students. LEAs are typically thought of as school districts. DCPS is one LEA and the public charter sector has 66 LEAs. There are two fewer public charter LEAs than the year before because two closed the end of SY2024-25. Each LEA can offer one or more schools. As of SY2025-26, there are 250 public schools across Washington, DC. Scroll down to view the number of schools over time.

In SY2024-25, 54% of public schools in Washington, DC have enrollments ranging from 251 to 500 students (136 schools out of 251 total schools). 13 public schools enroll 100 or fewer students and 6 public schools enroll more than 1,000 students. By grade band, 47% of 179 schools with elementary grades have enrollments in the 251 to 500 student range, 38% of 78 schools with middle grades are in the 101 to 250 student range, and 34% of 41 schools with high school grades are in the 251 to 500 student range.
