After 50 years of decline, the District's population began steadily increasing between 2000 and 2020, growing by nearly 30,000 residents between 2000 and 2010 and by approximately 88,000 more over the following decade. The population decreased during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Census estimates now show a gradual rebound, reaching just under 700,000 residents in 2025. The Census also revised its previous 2024 estimate downward from 702,250 residents to 691,310 (as shown here).
