Trends in Distance to School

The median citywide walk distance for grades PK3 to 12 students between where they live and attend school is 1.5 miles and the average citywide walk distance is 2.3 miles (citywide data not shown below). Students in grades PK3 to 5 travel the shortest distances between home and school, and the walk distances increase as students get older. Despite slight decreases in recent school years, the measures for all public school students have been trending upward over the past 10 years, particularly for high school students. The trends differ by race/ethnicity. The increase in distance for Black high school students is particularly large over the 10 year period although the average distances have been leveling off and median distances have been decreasing in recent years. Hispanic/Latino students across every grade level but high school are traveling further over time. The walk distance for white students has decreased at the PK and elementary grades during the time period. Explore travel distances by grade bands, student race and ethnicity, enrollment category, student home ward, and via maps of student's home wards, planning areas, neighborhood clusters, and DCPS high school boundary in the dashboards below.
