The median citywide walk distance for grades PK3 to 12 students between where they live and attend school is 1.5 miles and the average citywide walk distance is 2.3 miles (data not shown below). Students in grades PK3 to 5 travel the shortest distances between home and school, and the walk distances increase as students get older. The measures for all public school students have been trending upward slightly over the past 10 years, particularly for high school students. The trends differ by race/ethnicity. The increase in distance for Black high school students over time is particularly large, while Hispanic/Latino PK, elementary, and middle grade students are traveling further over time. The walk distance for white students has decreased at the PK and elementary grades during the time period.
